Бож слово про хреста тим, що гинуть, то глупота, а для нас, що спасаємось, Сила Божа!

It is a delight to participate in this 30th anniversary celebration of God’s work in Kiev. Мені приємно взяти участь у святкуванні 30-ї річниці Божої роботи у Києві. When P. Jacob invited me to participate, he asked for a short video message via Zoom. Запрошуючи мене, п.Яків просив про коротку проповідь в Зумі. It occurred to me that I might be able to come in person. Мені ж видалося можливим приїхати особисто. There were obstacles. Були і перешкоди. So I prayed. Тому я молився. Shortly after, I found the way and now, by faith, I stand her in person. I love the conference title, “I want to remind you of the gospel,” which comes from 1 Corinthians 15:1. Мені подобається назва конференції, “Звіщаю ж вам, браття, Євангелію”, взята з 1Кор.15:1. In this letter, Paul deals with many problems that the church was facing. В цьому посланні Павло розбирає багато проблем, з якими стикнулася церква. He finds the solution to all these problems in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Він знаходить рішення для всіх цих проблем в Євангелії Ісуса Христа. That is why it is so important to remember the gospel. Ось чому так важливо пам’ятати Євангелію. The gospel is that Christ died for our sins and was raised from the dead to give us eternal life and living hope in the kingdom of God. Євангелія – це те, що Христос помер за наші гріхи і повстав з мертвих, щоб дати нам вічне життя і живу надію в царстві Бога. In the first chapters Paul reminds them of the message of the cross. У перших розділах Павло нагадує їм слово про хрест. In chapter 15 he reminds

When Paul wrote this letter to the Corinthians, the church was less than five years old. Коли Павло писав листа до Коринтян, цій церкві було не більше п’яти років. God had done a mighty work through Paul’s preaching and many had repented of their sins and accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. The Holy Spirit had poured out blessings upon them, including many spiritual gifts. Святий Дух вилив на них благословіння, в тому числі багато духовних дарів. But as time passed, problems arose in the church. Але з часом у церкві з’являлися проблеми. Its members began to focus on the personalities of its leaders instead of on Christ. Її члени зосередились на лідерах, а не на Христі. They took pride in the person who preached to them or baptized them rather than in Christ. Вони пишалися тими, хто їм проповідував чи хто їх хрестив, а не Христом. Moreover, they began to exalt human philosophies and cultural religious practices above the gospel. Більше того, вони

Paul really wanted to help the Corinthians get back on the right track. Павло дуже хотів допомогти Коринтянам повернутись на вірний шлях. So he wrote in 1:17, “For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel–not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.” Тому у вірші 1:17 він написав: “Бо Христос не послав мене, щоб христити, а звіщати Євангелію, і то не в мудрості слова, щоб безсилим не став хрест Христа.” Paul’s single intention and purpose was to preach the gospel of Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit. Коли Павло відвідав їх вперше, єдиним його наміром і метою була проповідь Євангелії Христа силою Святого Духа. In order to do this, he emptied himself of human wisdom and knowledge. Для цього він звільнився від людської мудрості і знання. Paul was highly educated–a Pharisee by training who understood philosophies of both east and west. Павло мав вищу освіту: навчений як фарисей, що розумів східну і західну філософію. But he resolved to know nothing among the Corinthians except Jesus Christ and him crucified (2:2). Але між коринтян він вирішив не знати нічого, крім Ісуса Христа, і того розп’ятого (2:2). Why was this so? Чому?

Look at 1:18. Погляньте на вірш 1:18: “For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” “Бож слово про хреста тим, що гинуть, то глупота, а для нас, що спасаємось, Сила Божа!”. What is the message of the cross? Що таке слово про хреста? Simply speaking, it is that Christ died for our sins. По-простому, це те, що Христос помер за наші гріхи. Sin is the most serious problem for any human being. Гріх — це найсерйозніша біда будь-якої людини. It is separation from God due to our disobedience. Це відділення від Бога через наш непослух. In this state of separation, we become like computers without electricity, or branches cut off of a tree; we become dead and useless and are destined for the garbage heap or to be burned in the fire. У цьому стані відділення ми схожі на комп’ютер без електрики чи на відрізані від стовбура гілки; ми стаємо мертвими і непотрібними, призначеними на смітник чи на спалювання. In fact, the end result is eternal condemnation in the fiery lake of burning sulfur (Rev 21:8). Справді, кінцевим результатом буде вічне засудження в озері, що палає сіркою (Об.21:8). There is nothing we can do to solve this problem. Ми ніяк не можемо це вирішити. We cannot solve it with money, education, hard work or good deeds. Ні грошима, ні освітою, старанною працею чи добрими вчинками. This is not just one

person’s problem, but the problem of all people of all time and in all places. Це не просто чиясь біда, це проблема всіх людей в усі часи і повсюди. Sin is the root of our sorrows, pain, sufferings and death. Гріх — це корінь нашого горя, болю, страждань і смерті.

However, as God surveyed mankind, he had compassion on us. Але Бог, споглянувши на людство, зглянувся. He loved us while we were his enemies and were utterly wretched. Він полюбив нас, коли ми були ворожими і зовсім жалюгідними. In his great love, he sent his one and only Son Jesus Christ into this world. З великою любов’ю Він послав у світ Свого Єдиного Сина Ісуса Христа. Though Jesus is the Son of God and the Eternal Word of God, he was born into time and space. Хоча Ісус — Син Божий та Вічне Боже Слово, Він народився у часі та просторі. He put on human flesh and lived among us as a man. Він зодягнувся в людське тіло і жив поміж нас як людина. Jesus humbly served all kinds of people, displaying sacrificial, unconditional love that brought healing and forgiveness and new life. Ісус смиренно служив різним людям, показуючи жертовну, безумовну любов, яка давала зцілення, пробачення і нове життя. And yet, this good, loving, gracious Jesus was betrayed, falsely accused, tried and condemned to death. Та цього доброго, люблячого, милосердного Ісуса зрадили, неправдиво звинуватили, судили і прирекли на смерть. Finally, he was crucified in the most painful and shameful death

possible. Врешті, Він був розіп’ятий і помер найболючішою і найганебнішою смертю. Why? Чому? It was for our sins. За наші гріхи. As Isaiah prophesied, “But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed” (Isa 53:5). Як пророкував Ісая, «А Він був ранений за наші гріхи, за наші провини Він мучений був, кара на Ньому була за наш мир, Його ж ранами нас уздоровлено!» (Іс.53:5). Jesus took our sins upon himself and became sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2Co 5:21). Ісус взяв на Себе наш гріх і став за нас гріхом, щоб стали ми Божою правдою в Нім! (2Кор.5:21). In this ways Jesus saved us from our sins. Таким чином Ісус спас нас від гріхів. Jesus also revealed who God is. Також Ісус показав, яким є Бог. God is love, but God is also holy. Бог є любов’ю, але також Бог є святим. God saved us in his love at the great cost of his one and only Son. В любові Бог спас нас дорогою ціною Свого Єдиного Сина. This God is worthy of all praise, honor and glory. Цей Бог гідний всієї хвали, честі і слави. Our Lord Jesus is worthy to be worshiped forever as our Savior and King. Наш Господь Ісус гідний вічного поклоніння як наш Спаситель і Цар.

Though God has provided such a wonderful salvation to humankind, he does not compel us to accept it. Хоча Бог дав

людству таке чудове спасіння, Він не примушує нас його приймати. As Paul tells us, there are always two responses. Як каже Павло, може бути дві відповіді. Some reject the gospel and call it foolishness. Хтось відкидає Євангелію і називає її дурістю. They will live in bondage to sin until they go to the fiery lake of burning sulfur for eternity. Вони житимуть у рабстві гріха і навічно загинуть в озері палаючої сірки. On the other hand, those who receive the message of the cross are saved from their sin. З іншого боку, ті, хто приймуть слово про хрест, спасуться від гріхів. They become children of God with eternal life in his kingdom. Вони стають божими дітьми, що мають вічне життя у Його царстві. They are happy in Jesus. Вони щасливі в Ісусі. The message of the cross is the power of God for salvation. Слово про хрест — це сила Божа на спасіння. As Jesus was crucified, two criminals hung on crosses nearby. Коли Ісуса розіп’яли, поряд висіли і два злочинці. One rebuked Jesus in his pride. Один гордо докоряв Ісусу. We can imagine what happened to him. Можна уявити, що з ним сталось. The other confessed his sin and guilt. Інший же визнав свій гріх і провину. He believed that Jesus was innocent and was being punished unjustly. Він повірив, що Ісус не винен і засуджений несправедливо. He heard Jesus’ prayer on the cross, “Father, forgive them.” Він чув, як Ісус на хресті молився: «Отче, пробач їм». He saw God’s love in Jesus and appealed to Jesus to remember him. Він побачив в Ісусі Божу

любов і попрохав, щоб Ісус його згадав. Jesus promised that he would be with him in paradise. Ісус пообіцяв, що той буде з Ним в раю. Immediately, all his sins were forgiven and he became a citizen of Jesus’ kingdom. Миттєво його гріхи були пробачені і він став громадянином Ісусового царства. God is pleased to save people who receive the message of the cross. Бог любить спасати тих, хто приймає слово про хрест. That is the secret. Це таємниця. When we simply believe the message of the cross, we are saved. Коли ми просто віримо у слово про хрест, ми спасенні.

Jesus has been merciful to me and allowed me to meet him at the cross as my Savior and Lord again and again. Ісус був до мене милостивим і дозволив зустрічати Його на хресті як мого Спасителя і Господа знову і знову. Once, as an intern pastor, I was chosen to be a messenger for an important Bible conference. Колись мене, як пастора-практиканта, вибрали проповідником на важливу Біблійну конференцію. I was proud of myself–my knowledge, my skill, my abilities. Я пишався собою — своїми знаннями, навичками і вміннями. I wanted to show off for my own honor. Мені хотілося похизуватись, щоб мене визнали. So I did not pray humbly or listen to advice from senior pastors. Тому я не молився в смиренні і не слухав порад від старших пасторів. As a result, I was totally unprepared to deliver a

message and was dropped as a speaker. Внаслідок цього я був геть не готовий і мене виключили зі списку проповідників. I felt humiliated and ashamed. Я почувався приниженим і засоромленим. I knew that my sinful pride had led me to a downfall. Я знав, що до падіння призвела моя грішна гордість. But in that moment, like the criminal beside Jesus, I looked up and heard Jesus pray for me, “Father, forgive him.” Та в той момент, як злочинець обабіч Ісуса, я споглянув вгору і почув, що Ісус молиться за мене: «Отче, прости йому». Jesus prayed for me and died for me to forgive my pride and self-glory seeking. Ісус молився за мене і помер за мене, щоб пробачити мою гординю і пошук власної слави. This inspired me to cry out for his mercy and forgiveness. Це надихнуло мене заплакати від милості і пробачення. Indeed, Jesus lifted my burden of sin, transformed my life and blessed me abundantly. Справді, Ісус підняв тягар мого гріха, перемінив моє життя і рясно благословив. By the message of the cross I have been saved. Now I preach the message of the cross. Словом про хрест я був спасенний. Зараз я проповідую слово про хрест.

Last week I went to exercise at a health club near my home. Минулого тижня я відвідав оздоровчий комплекс біля дому. When I asked one of the store managers for help, he noticed my email address is “pastorronw@gmail.com.” Коли я попросив про

допомогу одного з менеджерів, Він помітив, що моя електронна пошта «pastorronw@gmail.com». He asked, “Are you a pastor?” Він спитав: «Ви пастор?». When I said, “yes,” he told me he had prayed just two hours earlier for someone to come and help him. Коли я сказав «Так», він розповів, що за дві години до того молився, щоб хтось прийшов і допоміг йому. The burden in his soul was too heavy for him to bear. На його душі був занадто важкий тягар. His name is Faizaan, from Pakistan, and his family is Muslim. Його звали Файзаан, з Пакистану, і його сім’я — мусульмани. But in that moment, all that mattered to him was receiving God’s help. Але у той момент для нього важливо було лише отримати допомогу від Бога. I told him that sin is the great burden we all have to carry but that Jesus came to save us from our sins. Я розповів йому, що гріх — то тяжка ноша, яку несе кожен з нас, але Ісус прийшов і звільнив нас від наших гріхів. I shared with him Romans 5:8, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Я поділився з ним віршем до Римлян 5:8: «А Бог доводить Свою любов до нас тим, що Христос умер за нас, коли ми були ще грішниками». He was visibly affected by the Bible verse. Цей вірш вочевидь зворушив його. He gave me his phone number voluntarily and agreed to meet for Bible study. Він захотів дати мені свій номер телефону і домовився зустрітись для вивчення Біблії. We met Tuesday night and began John’s Gospel

study. У Вівторок ми ми зустрілись і почали вивчати Євангелію від Івана. What he really needs is the message of the cross. Only Jesus can save him. Насправді йому потрібне слово про хрест. Лише Ісус може його спасти.

In the Chicago area, university students are returning to campus for the first time in about 18 months. Поблизу Чікаго студенти вперше за 18 місяців повернулись до кампусів. After suffering through the Covid 19 pandemic and being isolated due to lockdowns, they are very thirsty for fellowship. Постраждавши від пандемії Ковід-19, після самотності через ізоляцію, вони прагнуть спілкування. They have been eager to come to Bible club meetings and to participate in cookouts and meet UBF members. Вони з радістю приходили на зібрання Біблійного клубу і на пікніки та стрічалися з членами UBF. Hundreds of students in Chicago have shown interest in Bible study. У Чікаго сотні студентів виявили бажання вивчати Біблію. Though they are the intellectuals of our nation, their souls are so thirsty and burdened. Хоча це — інтелектуали нашої нації, їхні душі дуже спраглі та обтяжені. They need Jesus. Їм потрібен Ісус. Only the message of the cross can save them. Лише слово про хрест може їх спасти. So we pray that through one to one and small group Bible studies they may encounter Jesus, confess their sins, and accept Jesus’ grace of forgiveness at the cross. Тому ми молимося, щоб через

for 120 disciples of Jesus to be raised on our Chicago campuses for the glory of God to advance his kingdom. Ми молимось, щоб у кампусах Чікаго постало 120 учнів Ісуса для слави Бога і поширення Його царства.

Sometimes, in ministering to intellectuals, we are tempted to think we need something more than the message of the cross, such as psychological, philosophical, or sociological knowledge. Інколи, під час служіння інтелектуалам, нам здається, що потрібно щось більше, ніж слово про хрест, таке як знання з психології, філософії чи соціології. Or we may think we need the latest music equipment, culturally trendy programs, the newest technology. Або ж ми думаємо, що необхідне найкраще музичне устаткування, трендові культурні програми чи останні технології. We may think that without these things we cannot minister to college students. Може здаватись, що без цього служити студентам неможливо. But that is not true. Але це не так. All that we really need is the message of the cross. Все, що потрібно насправді, це слово про хрест. Only the message of the cross brings salvation to people’s souls. Лише слово про

хрест несе людським душам спасіння. Surely, Kiev UBF has been built and established on the message of the cross. Безперечно, київська церква UBF була заснована і збудована на слові про хрест. Thank God that Kiev UBF leaders have proclaimed the message of the cross for the last 30 years. Дякую Богу, що лідери київської церкви UBF звіщали слово про хрест впродовж останніх 30 років. May God enable us all to proclaim the message of the cross for the next 30 years. Нехай Бог допоможе нам звіщати слово про хрест і наступні 30 років. This message will penetrate the hearts of university students and many new disciples of Jesus will be raised. Це слово проникне в серця студентів університетів і постане багато нових учнів Ісуса. May God’s kingdom come through the message of the cross. Нехай у Київ, Чікаго та по всьому світу прийде Боже царство через слово про хрест.
